Man charged with young mother's murder in Cork

A 26-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a young mother in Cork earlier this year.

Adam O’Keeffe, with an address at St Vincent’s Hostel, Cork, was arrested earlier and brought before a sitting of Cork District Court.

He was charged with the murder of 22-year-old Amy McCarthy, on a date between 29 and 30 April last at Sheares Street in the city.

When arrested charged and caution, Mr O’Keeffe made no reply.

Judge Olann Kelleher granted the State’s application to remand him in custody to appear again before the district court on 13 December next.

The body of the mother of one, who was from Greenmount in Cork, was found by paramedics in a derelict office on Shares Street after the alarm was raised by a man who could not wake her.

An inquest earlier this year heard that she had died from multiple blows to the head and strangulation.

Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster said her death was complicated by acute alcohol intoxication.
