Former Dublin Lord Mayor to consider Áras bid

Former Lord Mayor of Dublin Christy Burke has indicated he is considering contesting the Presidential election.

A statement issued on the independent councillor’s Facebook page tonight said: “One of Dublin’s finest ever Lord Mayor and long serving cllr, Christy Burke is considering throwing his hat into the ring to run for president of Ireland.

“The first thing on his agenda would be housing for all,” the short statement concluded.

First elected to Dublin City Council in 1999, he has been re-elected in the three local elections since then in the north inner city.

Speaking to RTÉ Politics he confirmed that he considering contesting the election. The support of four local authorities is required for a nomination to put him into the race.

“After putting the post up on Facebook I have already got about 800 people contacting me to wish me well,” he said.

The independent councillor added, “To be honest I have been blown away by the immediate response. People have offered me all sorts of help from PR to people offering a room in their home for me to stay in to keep costs down if I am travelling around the country canvassing. I have got a great sense of gratitude from people already.”

A prominent member of Sinn Féin for much of his political career, he has been an independent councillor since 2009.

Since February 1982, Mr Burke unsuccessfully contested nine Dáil elections.

He was Lord Mayor of Dublin from June 2014 to June 2015.

He said he is meeting with his immediate team in the next few days. “There is no harm discussing it and we will decide over the weekend,” he added.
